Is it legal to Use Online Homework Help Service?

The legality of the usage of online Homework Help services is probably one of the topics that almost every student contends with. And a debate that is not likely to end any time soon. This is a discussion that is being constantly fueled by questions such as:

Is it right to have someone do your homework or assignment for you and then present it as your own work, get good grades and an impressive diploma but be incompetent in the field simply because someone did your work for you?

Having said that, the legality of use of Online Homework Help Services can be looked at from two perspectives:

  1. The users
  2. The service providers

Legal issues for users

  • Plagiarism
  • Since students get the work done for them and they in turn submit the work as theirs, this is illegal as it amounts to plagiarism. However if the said student gets the work done and he or she quotes the reference sources it is generally accepted in academic circles.

  • Cheating
  • With the comfort of knowing that he or she can get her work done for them, a student might fail to study and still get to pass in the assignments given, which is tantamount to cheating in the assignments.

Whether it is legal or not to use these services, can be looked at from the point of view of motive. If a student goes to an online homework site to get genuine help it is ok, but when the said student goes to the same site simply because he or she doesn’t want to do the work by themselves then it raises legal, ethical and moral questions.

Legal issues for service providers

  • Lack of regulatory structures
  • There being no properly instituted bodies that regulate Online Homework Help Service providers, it becomes difficult to ascertain the qualification of the service providers or even the quality of their services. Others are just focused on making money.

  • Privacy of Customer Information
  • Most service providers require that users subscribe for their services where potential users provide personal information about the user. At times this information is misused and sold to marketing agencies which results in misuse and spamming of emails.

  • Copyright Infringements
  • Some Service providers avail books and works online, which are properties of other authors, without their consent or even knowledge. This is illegal in most countries.
